The government has been asked to pay a �4.2m bill to cover the cost of policing the Labour Party 2006 conference in Manchester. Home Office minister Tony McNulty said the department was considering the Greater Manchester Police application.
The conference, at the G-Mex Centre in September, will involve a massive security operation.
In addition to counter terrorism plans the police are expecting to deal with hundreds of demonstrators.
Mr McNulty said: "The Home Office provide a special grant to police authorities to pay for the policing of the main annual party conferences.
"Greater Manchester Police have submitted a bid of �3.2m (revenue) plus �1m (capital) for policing the 2006 Labour Party autumn conference.
"The application is being considered and a decision will be taken shortly."
