About 25,000 runners took part in the 10k race

The Great Manchester Run, launched in 2003, started in Portland Street and passed the Old Trafford football ground and the Imperial War Museum North.

Eritrean Olympic 10,000m bronze medal winner Zersenay Tadesse won the men's race in 27 minutes and 36 seconds.

Ethiopian Berhane Adere claimed the women's title with a time of 30 minutes and seven seconds.

Both broke their national records.

Haile Gebrselassie won the race last year, crossing the line in 27 minutes and 25 seconds.

Several roads were closed in Manchester and Salford for the BUPA-sponsored race.

Greater Manchester Police said major roads, including Oxford Street, Lower Mosley Street and Chester Road, were expected to be reopened in the late afternoon.
