Road race set to run until 2009
Great Manchester Run
About 16,000 people took part in the race this year
The largest 10k road race in the UK, the Great Manchester Run, has been secured for the next five years.

Manchester City Council is to sign an agreement with event organisers Nova International on Wednesday.

The run, which made its debut in 2003, passes Old Trafford football stadium and the Imperial War Museum North.

More than 16,000 people took part in the race this year, including world record holder Paul Tergat and Olympic medallist Sonia O'Sullivan.

The race has brought thousands of visitors to the city in the last two years.

Sponsored by BUPA, it has raised funds for Kirsty's Appeal for Manchester children's hospice Francis House, Cancer Research UK and the Leukaemia Research Fund.

Olympic Medallist Brendan Foster will be in Albert Square at 1500 BST to watch council leader Richard Leese sign the contract with Nova International.
