The council hopes the landfill visit will encourage recycling |
Critics of a town's recycling policy could be silenced with a trip to the local landfill site. Bury Council is offering a tour of its recycling operation to 12 residents, with a "highlight" being the town's waste dump.
It hopes that the trip will spark more enthusiasm for recycling rather than dumping waste.
The day will also include a visit to a site in Darwen, Lancashire, where the waste is sorted for recycling.
A trip to a thermal recovery operation in Bolton will also be on the agenda for the volunteer residents.
'Nuts and bolts'
The council says it is meeting government targets with its kerbside recycling scheme but is aware that some residents are "sceptical".
Mike Savage, the council's operational services officer, said: "We want to show residents what actually happens to the waste we collect.
"We feel duty-bound to help explain the way recycling is organised in the borough to residents and hope this will be a good way to show some locals the nuts and bolts of the operation.
"It should be an interesting day and hopefully people will go away with a greater awareness of the challenges we all face in boosting the borough's recycling rate."
