A giant human-shaped sculpture constructed from an old washing machine, fridges and computer parts will be unveiled on the South Bank. The seven-metre high figure made from three tonnes of junk is designed to highlight electronic waste.
Project director Rob Holdway said an average household in the UK has 25 electrical and electronic appliances.
They want to promote more recycling, reuse, repair and sustainable manufacturing to reduce waste.
The sculpture called the WEEE Man, which will be on display until 27 May, represents the total Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) consumed by an average person from the UK in their lifetime.
The idea was a collaboration between the Royal Society for the encouragement of arts, manufactures and commerce and IT firm Canon Europe.
Mr Holdway said: "The UK is running out of landfill sites. Both the public and business need to realise the huge environmental damage our current consumption of WEEE causes."
London Mayor Ken Livingstone said: "This unique sculpture works so well because it provokes us to realise how much electrical and electronic waste we all create."
