Engineering error causes delays
South West Trains' train
One line into Waterloo was closed for more than two hours
An inquiry has been launched after rail passengers suffered severe delays on a busy commuter route into London.

Network Rail said a train was damaged after hitting the third rail which had not been put back in the correct position following overnight work.

The Waterloo to Portsmouth service hit the conductor rail at about 7am and was taken to Clapham Junction to allow passengers to transfer to other trains.

One line was closed for more than two hours causing severe delays.

South West Trains transports 200,000 people into London's Waterloo Station every day, and 80,000 in the rush hour.

Network Rail said a thorough and full investigation would be carried out.

The firm added that a recent move to transfer all maintenance work back in-house was aimed at reducing such incidents.
