Snowy roads see a rise in crashes

Gritter lorry
Gritters are working to get the county's roads cleared

Police in Lincolnshire have reported a three-fold increase in the number of car accidents due to snowy weather.

Officers said problems were mostly caused by drivers going too fast in difficult conditions.

More snow overnight has also affected other transport links with at least one bus company cancelling services in the Grantham area.

The county council said it had continued with gritting but about 50 schools were closed.

The Met Office said the prolonged cold period was the worst the county had seen for more than 20 years.
