Fire pollution assessed
Smoke from tyre fire
There are concerns the asbestos smoke has affected wildlife
The long-term effects of last week's Kirton fire will depend on an operation to remove polluted water.

Heavily contaminated water used to put out the tens of thousands of burning tyres has been dammed by the Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Staff from the Environment Agency are assisting fire crews in pumping this into a safe storage facility.

Meanwhile a medical expert has assured people living near Thursday's fire there is little threat to health from the incident.

Disease risk

But despite the area being given the all-clear, some insurance companies are asking people who left their properties not to return until their own assessments are complete.

Alan Scott, a Senior Medical Inspector for the Health and Safety Executive, is glad people are being cautious but thinks they should not worry too much.

He said: "People do sometimes say that one (asbestos) fibre can kill, and in theory that is true.

"In theory it is also true that one cigarette can kill but in reality, if you go to Lincoln County Hospital and you see people being treated for smoking related diseases, you don't see people who have only had one cigarette."
