City to tackle under-age drinking

Officials in Leicester say they are going to carry out the biggest ever crackdown on under-age drinking.

The move comes after alcohol-related hospital admissions have risen over the last four years from 2,394 in 2003 to 6,375 in 2007.

Police also recorded more than 5,000 crimes connected to drink in the city in 2006/07.

The campaign will include increased patrols, test purchases and labels to show where alcohol has been bought.

Rod Moore, Deputy Director of Public Health in Leicester said: "Alcohol is the cause of much misery as well as pleasure, and we need to wake up to that fact.

"This campaign is an important start, and we will be working with partners and the public in the months and years ahead to ensure that alcohol can be safely and responsibly enjoyed as part of a confident and prosperous city."
