Underage drink sales are exposed
Police have said they are disappointed after three off-licences sold alcohol to underage drinkers during test purchases in Leicester.

Thirteen off-licences were tested during the operation carried out in the city on Saturday night.

A 14-year-old girl attempted to buy alcohol in the checks.

Pc Jon Webb said he was disappointed three premises failed the checks and added that other shop staff were reluctant to challenge the teenager.

He said: "Officers will be returning to those off-licences to remind staff about their responsibilities and the consequences of selling alcohol to under-18s, including an 80 on-the-spot fine... the licensee also risks losing their licence.

"I hope this operation shows licensees in Leicester that preventing underage drinking remains a priority for police in the city in 2008."
