Ryanair is to fly ten new routes from Castle Donington |
Budget airline Ryanair is adding 10 new routes from Nottingham East Midlands Airport, creating 150 jobs. From February passengers will be able to fly to three new destinations in Spain, two in Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Sardinia, Scotland and Ireland.
The low-fares airline currently flies 17 routes from Castle Donington.
The airport anticipates that an extra 500,000 passengers will fly each year from Nottingham East Midlands Airport to the new destinations.
'Great news'
The new destinations are Alghero (Sardinia), Bratislava, Knock, Milan, Valencia, Granada, Inverness, Krakow, Pisa and Santiago.
Ryanair chief Michael O'Leary said next year 1.8 million passengers would travel with Ryanair to and from NEMA.
"Not only is this great news for passengers but it is also a major boost for business and tourism in the region which will now enjoy an upsurge in year-round visitors from continental Europe.
"This will support 1,800 jobs in the Midlands and deliver a visitor spend of 150m."
He added: "This expansion will be achieved through Ryanair's investment in three new aircraft. These will also create 150 new, highly-paid jobs at the airport."
More visitors
NEMA managing director Penny Coates said she was delighted with Ryanair's announcement.
"The 27 routes they now offer have played an important part in assisting NEMA in fulfilling its role as wealth generator for the region."
Richard Dickinson, chief executive of East Midlands Tourism, said the new routes were great news.
"Greater accessibility into the region is key if we are to continue to grow our share of the inbound market and attract more overseas visitors to our destinations, many of whom are looking for new places to visit in the UK," he said.
