A5 stretch to close for a month
A three-mile stretch of one of the Midlands' busiest roads is to close for five weeks from 21 October to allow for resurfacing and improvement work.

The Highways Agency said the 1.8m work will shut both carriageways.

It will see resurfacing of the stretch on the Leics-Warks border, between the Cross-In-Hand island, near Magna Park, and the Gibbet roundabout.

Motorists will be diverted on the A4303 Lutterworth Bypass, and then on the A426, towards Rugby and the M6.

'Smoother ride'

The footpaths will also be resurfaced, road markings repainted and new signposts put up on the road which is largely dual-carriageway and perfectly straight.

The road - which runs from London to Holyhead - acts as the boundary between Warwickshire and Leicestershire.

Known as Watling Street, the stretch to be closed is between Rugby and Hinckley, and is used for traffic heading for the M1, M6 and M69.

Duncan Rogers, Highways Agency route manager, said: "This resurfacing work is essential to ensure that the A5 road surface is kept to the highest safety standards.

"The new surface will also be low-noise and provide a smoother ride for drivers. I would advise road users to allow extra time for their journeys."

The road should reopen on 27 November.
