Call for dual carriageway on A5
A delegation from Shropshire is meeting Road Safety Minister David Jamieson to demand improvements to the A5 between Shrewsbury and Wales.

North Shropshire MP Owen Paterson claims that since 1992 nearly 50 people have died on a 32-mile stretch from north of Shrewsbury to Ruabon, Wales.

The MP, who arranged the talks, says the A5 needs to be upgraded to a dual carriageway throughout.

County and district council leaders are involved in the meeting on Monday.

Saturation point

Mr Paterson said: "This is a horrifically dangerous road. The Oswestry bypass was built for 18,000 vehicles but there are well over 26,000.

"I would ask David Jamieson to look first at doing the most dangerous sections, such as at West Felton and Shotatton."

The MP says the county council believes the road will reach saturation point quite soon.

His figures include a five-mile stretch at the end of the A5, on the A483 in Wales leading to Ruabon.

The delegation is meeting Mr Jamieson on Monday afternoon at the Transport Ministry.
