Police will seize cars from joyriders and boy racers
Police in Melton Mowbray say they will seize cars and motorbikes belonging to anyone seen driving dangerously.

It follows increasing complaints about joyriding and "boy racers".

Public roads, car parks and even fields are being regularly used by young people in the Melton area as makeshift racetracks and circuits.

Police have now launched Operation Jet Set and plan to seize their cars and motorbikes, with a fee of 105, rising by 12 a day, to get them back.

Face consequences

Anyone seen - or being reported for - driving recklessly, will first be given a written warning which lasts one year.

After that their car will be taken away and impounded.

Inspector Rob Folwell, Head of Melton Police, said: "Operation Jet Set is aimed at stopping people in their tracks from using vehicles irresponsibly.

"Dangerous and anti-social driving has the potential to cause distress, damage and even injury or death.

"We won't use this legislation lightly, but at the same time, enough is enough as far as local residents and the police are concerned.

"If you act irresponsibly, you will face the consequences."
