Shake-up looms for railway centre
Great Central Railway
The attraction has been running for over 30 years
Major changes are set to take place at one of Leicestershire's best known tourist attractions.

Managers at the Great Central Railway are reviewing the business and say there will be redundancies but hope to increase the number of trains.

They say too little has been done to promote the Loughborough-based steam railway and too much time is spent maintaining the trains.

It has also been indicated that price rises are likely.

Close down

The railway currently employs 35 paid staff but officials accept, in future, the attraction will rely more heavily on volunteers.

They also insist that the railway will still represent value for money.

Managing Director Graham Oliver felt the message was simple.

He said: "We do need money. We need people to come to the Great Central Railway, we need local people to support us and if they support us we certainly can survive.

"Use it or lose it, because if people don't use these facilities they will go.

"We have seen many attractions and facilities close down just from lack of use."
