Managers of a steam railway say future plans have been thrown into doubt following the theft of thousands of pounds worth of signalling equipment. The Loughborough-based Great Central Railway has been plagued by attacks from vandals and thieves.
In the latest incident on Sunday night 70,000 worth of equipment was stolen.
Some of the items weighed nearly half a tonne each, so it is believed trucks with heavy lifting gear must have been used in the break-in.
Restoration delayed
The thieves broke through high security locks at Swithland Sidings.
An automatic warning system worth 50,000 and points motors valued at more than 5,000 each were taken.
The railway chief executive Graham Oliver said the stolen items are standard railway equipment which could be used on any network in the country.
He warned without them plans to restore the Swithland Signal Box could be put back years.
