 Inmates wanted to help children learn to read |
A school that desperately needs new books has received a cash donation from prison inmates. Joe McNulty has persuaded his fellow inmates and prison staff at Ashwell jail near Oakham in Rutland to donate �200.
Some of the inmates earn less than �10 a week for the work they do while in prison.
The money is going to Ashby Church of England Primary School in Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire, where school staff have already given up a day's pay to buy new books.
Cash-strapped
Mr McNulty said: "I came up with the idea of using some of the money from the prison.
"I went to one of the officers here who thought it was a good idea.
"So, I just approached all the prisoner's with a list and took their names and number and how much they wanted to donate."
He hopes the money raised can help refill the shelves so the children will have plenty of books to read in the future.
