Some parents had raised concerns over the location of the office |
Controversial plans for a probation service office next door to a primary school in Chippenham will not go ahead. Wiltshire probation service has identified alternative premises for its new offices, and no longer considers the site near the Ivy Lane Primary School as an option.
The service has always said it would alter the location if it could find another site.
Head teacher Chris Marshall welcomed the decision, but still plans to present a petition from local parents to the House of Commons on Monday.
'Protecting interests'
Chief probation officer, Diana Fulbrook, said: "When we first spoke to governors at the school, the site nearby was our only option.
"We are delighted that, with the co-operation of two local councils, we have now identified other possible sites."
The alternative sites will be made public after feasibility studies are carried out.
One ex-chairman of the governors, Maureen Lloyd, told BBC News Online: "Parents were incensed by the proposals and mounted a great campaign.
"The head teacher was protecting the interests of those children."
The probation service is responsible for helping offenders just released from prison and those with non-custodial sentences.
