Donations for cash-strapped school
children in the school library
The school is buying books with the money donated
A school in Leicestershire that is short on books has been inundated with offers of support.

Ashby Church of England Primary School in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire faces a 38,000 budget shortfall and needed new books for its school library.

Teachers at the school decided to donate a day's pay to help the school buy more books on 4 July.

National media coverage of the story has resulted in dozens of donations and offers of help - including 1,500 worth of books from Penguin's Puffin Book Club.

'Really excited'

Head teacher Sheila Grice said: "We are really pleased with the response we've had - it will double the amount of money we had to spend on books this year."

Teacher Janet Stevenson said: "The children are really excited about the books that have been donated."

"I have been able to buy all the books I need with the donatons - it has been really brilliant."

Children's author Helen Cresswell from Nottinghamshire has also donated some of her books to the school. She is the author of more than 60 novels - including many children's books.

The money from the staff, including six members of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, was handed over to the school on Friday, 4 July - on what teachers called Pay Back Day.
