The club's new crest features a shrimp which is the team's nickname |
Morecambe Football Club's new £12m stadium is to be called "The Globe Arena" after the club sealed a £250,000 sponsorship deal. Globe Construction, who are building the new ground at Westgate, have agreed to sponsor the club for five years. The 6,000 capacity stadium will also be used for community sports activities and ready for the 2010/11 season. In consultation with the team's fans the club also revealed a new crest, a large shrimp logo on a red shield. Chairman Peter McGuigan said the new crest made a bold statement about the club "as it moves into its next exciting era". "Our nickname is 'The Shrimps' and we're sure our fans will be delighted with the new logo," he said. "The new development when completed will offer not only a fantastic stadium worthy of our status as a Football League club but also act as a high-quality sporting and social venue for the local community." Morecambe gained League status for the first time in their 90-year history, after beating Exeter City in May 2007. The club was first established in 1920 and the team played at Christie Park, which was named after Mr J B Christie, a former president of the club who bought the ground and left it to the club in 1927.
