Trams have been running in Blackpool for 120 years |
Crossings across Blackpool's tram tracks are to be closed as part of a modernisation programme. The section of the Blackpool-Fleetwood tramway between Uncle Tom's Cabin and Little Bispham are being re-laid over the winter.
Most of the gated crossings which are not at tram stops do not meet safety guidelines, Blackpool Council said.
Crossings at tram stops will be retained and improved as part of the programme.
The closures will also help to improve journey times and comfort for tram passengers, the council said.
Crossing points
Councillor Maxine Callow, of Blackpool Council, said: "As part of the works to modernise the tramway and meet current safety standards some of the crossings that lie between tram stops need to be closed to rationalise the number of crossings along the route.
"However, only those crossings that fall between tram stops will be removed. All existing tram stops will have an improved crossing point for pedestrians."
During the course of the track replacement works, temporary pedestrian crossings will be provided.
The current works on the tram tracks are due to be completed by Easter 2008 and bus replacements are in operation while work is taking place.
