Trams have been running in Blackpool for 120 years

It is the first time in the tram network's history that its services have been out of action.

Planned improvements include replacing 3km (1.8m) of track and building a new electrical sub-station in Fleetwood.

Blackpool council has said the �11.8m works, funded by the Department for Transport, will make tram rides quieter and smoother for passengers.

Historical tramway

Councillor Maxine Callow said: "Our aim is to carry out this work with the least possible disruption and I would ask our tourism colleagues and those who use the tram to bear with us.

"The council apologises for any inconvenience and reassures local residents and businesses that this really is essential work.

"We are starting the work as soon the lights are switched off to ensure that it is all finished by Easter."

Blackpool's tram system was the country's first permanent electric street tramway. It opened on 29 September 1885 and ran from Cocker Street to South Shore.
