New 'vision' plan for Blackpool
Blackpool at night
The consultants will work in Blackpool for six months
An international team of consultants is to develop a "vision" for the revamp of the coastal resort of Blackpool.

The plan is expected to include a re-modelling of the seafront, modernising of the illuminations and improvements of the tram network.

Although not directly connected to the bid to build a Las Vegas-style "super casino" hotel complex in the town, casinos could be included in the plans.

The consultants are expected to work on the proposals for up to six months, before the development of any new projects.

Now is a once-in-a-generation opportunity with funding and other opportunities coming together

Steve Weaver, Blackpool Borough Council
The plans were being unveiled to councillors at a meeting on Wednesday night.

Bill Hanway, of Edaw Consultants, said the plans are a "unique opportunity to reverse a decade long decline" in the town.

He told BBC North West Tonight: "We're going to be working very closely with the council, to create a vision and implement an experience that will bring international and national visitors back to Blackpool."

'Right time'

Steve Weaver, chief executive of Blackpool Council, said this kind of re-development was not possible, just two or three years ago.

He said: "Now is a once-in-a-generation opportunity with funding and other opportunities coming together, so now is exactly the right time for it.

"Casinos may be part of this, but they don't have to be, we'll re-create and re-shape this resort with or without them.

"The consultants will be doing their work from now until March next year and we will start projects from that point on."
