Show goes on at seaside theatre
Blackpool's North Pier
The theatre has a 129-year history
The curtain has gone up at Blackpool's famous North Pier theatre only months after it was threatened with closure.

The Grade II-listed building is hosting its first show, after it was mothballed earlier this year due to dwindling audience numbers.

It would have been its first summer without a programme in 129 years.

A Save Our Shows campaign was launched and new owners Six Piers lined up shows for the season, beginning with Halfway To Paradise - The Billy Fury Story.

Six Piers took over the running of Blackpool's piers from Leisure Parcs earlier this year.

Leisure Parcs had urged the public to give their views on what they wanted from the theatre.

'Strong shows'

Residents, entertainers and hotel owners backed the campaign keep it open.

David Chapman, operations director of Six Piers, said: "While the timescales did not allow us to pursue all the proposals, I'm delighted to announce we do now have three very strong shows that we've contracted for this season.

"We're in negotiation with several other producers who may look towards bringing quality show productions into North Pier for one offs during the Illumination period.

"But for the moment it's up to the public to show their support for the new productions and I await with interest the response and support for the shows on North Pier this summer."
