DJ to switch on Blackpool lights
Chris Evans
Chris Evans will host BBC Radio 2's 1400-1700 Saturday slot
DJ Chris Evans, who recently returned to the BBC, will be switching on the Blackpool illuminations, it was announced on Monday.

Mr Evans will present a Radio 2 show from the resort on 2 September.

Chart toppers McFly, Rachel Stevens, Lee Ryan and Erasure will be taking part in an hour-long show.

Thousands of fans will gather at a specially-built arena in the shadow of Blackpool Tower marking the launch of week long celebrations in the resort.

"Everybody knows Blackpool is the greatest seaside town in the world - some of my friends say they haven't been there to which I reply, 'well you should go'," said Evans, who used to present Radio 1's breakfast show.

Previous celebrities who have thrown the switch for the illuminations include movie star Jayne Mansfield, race horse Red Rum, The Muppets and ex-Spice Girl Gerri Halliwell.

Last year Blackpool celebrated the 125th anniversary of the free show.

This year's illuminations run until 6 November.
