Light show visitors' belt warning
Blackpool illuminations
Drivers visiting the illuminations are being urged to be more responsible
Families viewing the Blackpool Illuminations by car are being urged to make sure they wear seatbelts.

The initiative coincides with the start of half-term, one of the busiest weeks for the world-famous attraction.

Blackpool Council and members of the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety (LPRS) have organised the project.

Blackpool's road safety manager Carol Bracegirdle said: "We want people to have fun in Blackpool, but we want them to do it safely and sensibly."

Blackpool's famous six-mile light show is visited by about 3.5m people every year.

Safety message

Ms Bracegirdle added: "We've all witnessed one too many children standing in the car with the head out of the sunroof, and even sitting on the bull bars at the front of a 4x4. This is irresponsible on behalf of the drivers."

Linda Sanderson, community manager of the LPRS, said: "Although traffic travels very slowly through the Illuminations it only takes one shunt to significantly injure a child."

The LPRS team will bring its mobile information unit to Blackpool this weekend and on selected nights next week, from where its "Bee Safe" mascot will hand out leaflets and stickers.

There will also be a greater police presence during half-term with officers stationed along the promenade.
