Graffiti drive 'a great success'

The council received 239 removal requests from the public
A 100-day clean-up campaign to rid Medway of graffiti sites has been hailed a success.

Since the drive was launched in June, Medway Council has removed offensive language and spray paint and marker pen tags from 180 sites.

Councillor Rehman Chishti said: "This campaign has been a great success and demonstrates the real need for a dedicated graffiti removal team."

The council received 239 removal requests from members of the public.

It said the remaining 39 graffiti sites would be dealt with by the end of September.

'Detrimental effect'

The authority launched the 100-day drive in the hope that residents would have more pride in the cleaned areas.

Mr Chishti said: "Graffiti is not only unsightly, but it can have a detrimental effect on people's quality of life.

"It can give the impression that a community blighted by graffiti is home to gangs and anti-social behaviour, which is a perception Medway Council is committed to banish.

"There is a great deal to be proud of in Medway and this work demonstrates the council's continued commitment to make it a safer place for everyone."
