Rogue trader crackdown stepped up
Builder generic
Medway Council receives 6,000 complaints about traders a year
A curb on cowboy traders across Medway is being stepped up with the expansion of the council's Fair Trader scheme.

The Medway trading standards initiative allows customers to check which businesses have been approved before purchasing their goods or services.

More than 200 plumbers, builders and home repair companies have signed up to the scheme since its launch in 2003.

Its success means all services ranging from funeral directors to IT consultants will now be included.

Medway Council is also in the process of gaining accreditation for the scheme from the Office of Fair Trading.

The Fair Trader scheme guarantees customers "peace of mind" and the knowledge their contractor is obeying the law, that contracts are fair, work is fairly priced, and an assurance work will not be carried out without their permission.

About 6,000 complaints about businesses in the Medway area, many associated with home improvements, are received by trading standards officers each year.
