The first permanent cameras in Kent to record drivers' average speed are to be put on a stretch of road where there have been a number of fatal accidents. Five pairs of Speed Check Enforcement System (Specs) cameras will be in place on a 7.5km (4.6 mile) stretch of the A228 in Medway by next March.
Six people have also been seriously hurt on the stretch of road between Christmas Lane and Thamesport.
Temporary Specs cameras have previously been used on the M20 and M2 in Kent.
The new system, which will cost more than �400,000, has been funded by Kent and Medway Safety Camera Partnership and Medway Council.
Penalty points
The Specs cameras, which calculate the average speed between two points, will enforce the 40mph speed limit.
Offenders will get three penalty points on their driving licences and �60 fines.
"People in Medway have been requesting safety cameras on the A228 for some time," said Councillor Phil Filmer.
The cameras will be painted yellow and listed on the camera partnership's website so motorists know where they are operating.
"The aim is not to catch people speeding but to encourage them to slow down," said a spokeswoman.
