Beaches attract underage drinking
Beach at Whitstable
Groups of underage youngsters have been found drinking alcohol
A group of 19 underage youngsters were found to be drinking alcohol together on a north Kent beach during a police clampdown in the recent hot weather.

Police in Whitstable said they had sent letters to 45 sets of parents after stopping large numbers of young people with alcohol in the past seven days.

In one incident, children as young as 14 were found drinking near beach huts in Tankerton.

Cases of lager and bottles of strong cider or vodka have been confiscated.

The group of 19 youngsters were stopped by police and had their details taken at Whitstable West Beach last Friday evening.

Parents have been warned that any repeat of underage drinking could see their children being made the subject of an Acceptable Behaviour Agreement, or ultimately an Anti-social Behaviour Order.

Sgt David Brenchley said: "We are seeing young people coming to Whitstable from as far away as Wye to join their friends and drink on the beach.

"The foreshore will always be a popular venue for young people to meet, however we cannot accept underage drinking which leads to rowdiness and criminal damage."
