Man dies in quarry swim
A man has drowned trying to swim across a disused quarry in Kent.

The 21-year-old, who was from London, was with a group of friends who were trying to swim from one side of the quarry to another, police said.

Emergency services were called to the disused quarry on Springhead Road in Northfleet when he got into difficulties at about 1415 BST on Thursday.

The man was pulled out of the water and taken to hospital but he died soon afterwards.

Kent Police have confirmed the man was 21-years-old and from Peckham in London, but have not released his name.

They said a number of people were swimming in the quarry when the man and his friends dived in.

The man was taken to the Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford but pronounced dead just after 1530 BST.

Police have said they are going to liaise with the Health and Safety Executive to look into the circumstances of the man's death.
