Police are warning people to stay away |
A teenager has died in a disused quarry full of water, days after warnings were given not to swim there. The body of the 17-year-old, from Bath, was recovered from Holcomb Quarry near Shepton Mallet at 0100 on Saturday morning.
Police say he was with a group of friends, who called officers after the teenager got into difficulty at 2100 BST.
Police divers were called in to search the area.
Extra security
A police spokesperson said: "Talks are underway with the local council and the quarry's owners in a bid to prevent further gatherings."
A formal identification has taken place at Bath's Royal United Hospital and a post-mortem examination will be carried out on Monday.
Last Sunday, security at the quarry was tightened after a woman was badly hurt jumping off rocks.
It has been disused for 15 years, and has become a major attraction for swimmers and divers during hot weather.
Extra patrols, new fencing and road barriers were put in place after the accident last weekend, and the company which owns the quarry says it has done everything it could to stop people getting in.
