A 24-year-old man has died after jumping from rocks about 100 feet high into a quarry lake near Callington.

The man, who comes from the area, never resurfaced after jumping into the lake at Kit Hill on Saturday.

Police divers found the body on Saturday night.

They say the man jumped voluntarily during hot weather and put it down to high spirits.

Police spokesman, Sergeant Jonathan Phillips, said: "It was a tragic accident.

"We would warn people against this kind of activity."

The coroner was informed of the incident.

People living near the quarry said they were shocked by the death.

Elizabeth McKenzie, who lives at Drakewalls, said it would probably be impossible to prevent such accidents without either closing the quarry or having round-the-clock monitoring by Kit Hill Country Park staff.
