Mariners' stadium plan approved
Blundell Park, home of Grimsby Town
Blundell Park is one of the oldest grounds in the Football League
Plans for Grimsby Town Football Club's new 14.4m, 20,000-seat stadium have been given the go-ahead by planners.

Around 300 supporters turned up to a special North East Lincolnshire Council meeting, as well as some residents opposed to the move.

The club said it needed to move from its Blundell Park home in Cleethorpes, one of the oldest grounds in the league, to Great Coates near Grimsby.

The Mariners hope to move in time for the 2008/9 season.

Garden centre

People living near the Great Coates site said they feared the new stadium would be too noisy and cause traffic chaos on nearby streets.

The Grimsby, Cleethorpes and District Civic Society also warned it could discourage people from visiting the towns' centres.

The outline planning application is for a 20,100 capacity stadium, built as a phased development, with the first phase providing 12,000 seats.

The out-of-town site would also include a retail park, garden centre, hotel, three restaurants and more than 1,500 car and coach parking spaces.
