More snow fell in parts of the two counties overnight |
More than 100 schools in Herefordshire and Worcestershire have remained shut because of icy conditions. More snow fell overnight in parts of the two counties, leaving untreated roads in a dangerous state. Experts also said there was a moderate risk of further snowfall across the area over the next few days. Residents were warned to expect more disruption while Herefordshire Council's gritting service said it had been one of its busiest winters so far. All bin collections across Herefordshire were cancelled on Tuesday in the "interests of safety" of crews and the public. Collections scheduled for Tuesday will now take place on Saturday. Snowball complaints West Midlands Ambulance Service said it dealt with about 1,000 more calls than normal on Monday - a quarter of which were related to people falling over. Police said they received 80 complaints over a 24-hour period between Monday morning and Tuesday, in connection to snowballs being thrown in north Worcestershire. Officers said that in some cases windows had been broken. Pc Fred Hicks, of West Mercia Police, said: "Children have always thrown snowballs but it could be that residents are becoming less tolerant and perceive it as anti-social behaviour, when in fact the majority are doing nothing wrong. "However throwing snowballs at properties and vehicles can be dangerous and could result in a smashed window or cause a road traffic collision." He added that he wanted people to enjoy the snow but urged them to do so in a "safe and responsible manner".
