Travellers have lost their fight to extend a deadline to leave their illegal camp in Worcestershire.

The group, who were ordered to leave the site between Bredon and Eckington by April, applied to stay until a planning appeal next September.

But it was refused by the High Court on Tuesday as a planning inquiry was held when enforcement notices were issued by Wychavon District Council.

They unsuccessfully appealed and were given five months to leave the site.

A planning inspector issued the group of travellers with the deadline to quit the site after dismissing their appeals against the enforcement notices.

The group had wanted to stay until after the result of a planning appeal next September but High Court judge Mr Justice Tugendhat ruled against them.

He said: "The problem with this application is that if I were to grant it, I would in substance be depriving the decision of the inspector of any real effect."

The group of 20 families were issued with their first injunction from Wychavon District Council in July 2004.

The High Court ruled then that the group should leave the site once the planning process had been completed.
