Travellers ignore eviction notice

A group of travellers have ignored an order to leave their own land.

They were served with an eviction notice demanding they vacate the field near the village of Eckington, Worcestershire, by Saturday morning.

Wychavon District Council says the site is for agricultural use alone and took action after the building work was carried out on the land.

A spokesperson for the group's legal team said they intended to pursue their claim to live there through the courts.

The group, who bought the one-and-a-half acre field from a local farmer, have not carried out any further building work since the council issued the eviction notice on Wednesday.

Although an application to develop the field was submitted to the council on the same day the group bought the field, contractors began laying groundwork without waiting for a decision by the authority's planning committee.

Wychavon's managing director Jack Hegarty said: "This deliberate breach of planning control is totally unacceptable to the council and, of course, local residents."
