Cameras have been installed in a number of taxis in Redditch in an attempt to reduce violent attacks on drivers. Ten taxis out of 165 in the town have been selected to have the cameras installed.
It is hoped the digital cameras, which are linked to Redditch police station, will provide enough evidence to secure convictions in the courts.
A West Mercia Police spokesman said the majority of offences occurred on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and were often "fuelled by drink".
Pilot project
A number of companies have supplied the cameras for the 12-month pilot project and two out of the ten cameras have already been installed.
West Mercia Police's chief constable Paul West said funding for the cameras had come from the Home Office Safer Communities Initiative Fund.
"I am aware that there have been a number of incidents of violence and theft when passengers have not paid their fares," he said.
"Some of the taxi drivers have also been the victims of racist incidents.
"This will not be tolerated and is one of the main reasons why I believe that the installation of the cameras is an excellent idea."
