Drivers vow to ban violent fares
People who abuse taxi drivers in Ilkeston could be banned from using most of the town's cab firms in the future.

The Ilkeston Taxi Association which is made up of four local firms is bringing the action which will mean passengers who are violent towards drivers will not be picked up again.

Erewash Borough Council has not endorsed the new policy because it contravenes an 1847 law which states that Hackney cab drivers have to pick up fares.

Drivers say the action is necessary to protect taxi drivers.

John Richardson, head of the Ilkeston Taxi Association said: "The ban is necessary because over the last three years we have had no less than five assaults in the Ilkeston area.

"Not only with my own firm but with the other neighbouring firms as well.

"We've now got together to blanket ban anyone, so the message is leave taxi drivers alone."
