Power restored after heavy snow

Power has been gradually restored to homes in Gloucestershire after heavy snow brought down power cables cutting off supplies.

Electricity suppliers e.on said it had dealt with 20 faults, mostly in the Cheltenham and Cotswolds areas.

At its peak, 3,000 homes were without electricity. About 300 were still not reconnected by Tuesday morning.

The snow caused problems on the roads and trains. Many schools were closed in the Forest of Dean and the Cotswolds.

Driving conditions were difficult, although much of the snow in urban areas turned to slush.

About 20 cars were stuck on Birdlip Hill between the Air Balloon roundabout and the B4070.

A lorry jack-knifed on the A40 between Andoversford and Cheltenham.

The A46 at the Teddington Hands roundabout was closed after a crash between a lorry and a car.

The M48 old Severn bridge and Second Severn crossing were closed due to ice, but have since reopened.

First Great Western said train services from Cheltenham to London were delayed in the Swindon area due to flooding.

On Wednesday, Gloucestershire County Council said they would be supplying salt and grit to rural communities and refilling the county's grit bins.
