Table salt boosts gritter stock

Up to 500 tonnes of table salt has been ordered by a council to keep the roads gritted after its industrial rock salt supply ran low.

Gloucestershire County Council had reduced the number of roads gritted to preserve its remaining 650 tonnes of standard salt.

The table salt is mixed with sand but "it does the job", says council spokesperson Lisa Bonnell.

The salt will be supplied by a company from Cheshire.

The delivery of the table salt is in preparation for wintry conditions expected on Monday.
