Rare heathland bird numbers soar
Nightjar
The last such survey of the Nightjar was carried out in 1992
Numbers of a rare visiting bird in the South have almost doubled in the last decade, a major new survey has found.

Last summer a hundred volunteers scoured Dorset heathland at night, listening for the distinctive call of the African Nightjar.

The study has concluded there were 735 breeding pairs in Dorset in summer 2004, compared to 527 in 1992.

Richard Elston, head of the project, said it was "great news" for those concerned with heathland conservation.
