Designer sought for arts complex
Bournemouth's Winter Gardens concert hall
The Winter Gardens is to be demolished
A shortlist of architects and detailed plans are being drawn up for an 8m entertainment complex in Dorset.

Plans for a concert hall and arts centre on the site of the old Winter Gardens in Bournemouth were approved by Bournemouth Borough Council on Tuesday.

It will be home to Dance South West and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

The centre will house a cinema and two performance halls with 200 and 400 seats each, combining to create a third space of up to 1,000 capacity.

Other features will include an outdoor performance area, a recording and editing studio, rehearsal rooms and a cafe.

Councillor Angela Manton, leading the project, said, "Our research tells us local people want a facility not just for classical performances, but somewhere they can see comedy, jazz, dance, world music and much more."

The council has pledged 300,000 a year to subsidise the centre and is seeking additional funding from bodies including the Arts Council.
