Portland National Sailing Academy would be a venue for the Olympics |
Olympic sailor Simon Hiscocks will be visiting four Dorset schools to promote the London 2012 Olympics bid. He will ask students and staff to sign the giant Olympics flag in support.
London is one of five candidate cities and if selected, Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy will be the venue for the sailing events.
The four Dorset sports colleges would play a significant role in the event, for instance helping to host a national team's training camp.
New jobs
The schools to be visited are Queen Elizabeth's School in Wimborne, the Wey Valley School in Weymouth, Shaftesbury School and the Grange in Christchurch.
Miles Butler, director of environmental services, said: "If the bid is successful, it will open up even more opportunities to promote our world heritage coast and other tourist attractions, and provide Dorset with much needed new jobs, businesses and infrastructure, as well as improving our sports facilities."
The 10 metre by 12 metre flag is on a two month tour of Dorset, Devon and Cornwall.
It will be handed to members of the International Olympic Committee when they visit the UK in February to inspect facilities and assess public support.
