Moat dug to protect Royal village
Poundbury
Poundbury was conceived as a model rural community
A ditch has been dug next to the Prince of Wales' "model" village to stop travellers moving onto the site again.

About 60 travellers set up 13 caravans on the edge of Poundbury, Dorset, two weeks ago, causing concern among residents in the picturesque village.

They left after seven days, keeping a promise to move off after a child being treated in hospital had recovered.

The Duchy of Cornwall, which owns the land, has now dug a 400 yard long, five feet wide and four feet deep trench.

A spokeswoman for the Duchy of Cornwall estate, which owns the land, told BBC News Online: "Obviously we had a problem with travellers on the Duchy land and the Duchy is keen to secure the site as much as possible.

"A ditch was dug adjacent to the road to prevent it from happening again."
