The database searches for people travelling the same way |
A car sharing website in Devon is proving to be a success with more than 2,000 people signed up to the scheme. The website provides a database of potential car sharers and has recently been developed to make it even easier to use.
To join the scheme all people have to do is log on, free of charge, and register details.
People making similar journeys are then matched. There is a call centre for those who do not have internet access.
Convenient location
Individuals then contact suitable travelling companions via email and arrange to meet at a convenient location, bringing identification with them.
The system was commissioned by Devon County Council in partnership with Plymouth City Council and Torbay Council.
Ian Sweetland, who works at County Hall in Exeter, car shares with three other people from north Devon every day.
Logging on to the car share database helped him to find one of the other drivers.
He said: "As soon as I logged on to the website I was able to make contact with people whose journeys matched mine and find a third person to share the journey.
"Now we have a fourth person who has joined the group with three of us taking turns driving."
