| Tuesday, 14 January, 2003, 12:21 GMT Car share solution to airport congestion ![]() The website hopes to cut congestion and costs A new car-share scheme is being launched for people travelling to East Midlands Airport. It was suggested for both passengers and staff because almost 80% of airport employees drive to work alone. The success of East Midlands Airport has brought with it increased congestion and pollution. Passenger numbers have soared and the increase in people needed to run the operation has also meant more people driving to the Castle Donington site. Lower costs Recent figures show that of the 6,000 employees based there 79% drive to work alone. A web site has now been set up which aims to match up those who could share driving and the costs involved. It is thought car sharing with just one other person can cut the cost of a journey in half. Air passengers and those travelling to areas close to the airport can also use the system. More details are available on the website at or through a call centre on 0870 011 1199. | See also: 09 Jan 03 | England 03 Jan 03 | England 22 Dec 02 | England Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
