The scheme has members from all over South Gloucestershire |
A Gloucestershire-based car sharing scheme has been commened by the organisers of a national transport award. The Association for Commuter Transport (ACT) said 2carshare.com - a South Gloucestershire council-run website - "could well set a pattern for others to follow".
The website recently announced more than 100 new journeys were registered over the last two months. "There are now over 600 registered members." a spokesman said.
Kath Clark, of the council said: "We are delighted that our work has been recognised.
"The website has received fantastic support since its launch in December 2001 and we are pleased at the progress it has made and the growth in membership.
'Increasing pace'
"There are members from all corners of South Gloucestershire and beyond, and it is proving that it can save commuters money, cut traffic and reduce congestion."
At the ACT's Commuter Initiative Awards, the car sharing scheme was also praised for offering "quick, easy access to essential travel information."
Alastair Duff, Chairman of ACT said: "We are delighted to see so many companies coming up with their own innovative solutions to congestion and pollution, which shows the increasing pace and interest in the development of travel plans throughout the UK.
"Many organisations are now actively encouraging walking, cycling, car sharing and public transport use by their employees, and will be able to follow the example set by our four award winners."
