The amount of waste going into Devon's landfill sites could be cut drastically by two major new projects. Devon County Council has revealed plans to build a waste-generated electricity plant in Exeter. South Hams District Council will also start collecting composting material from homes.
Disposing of 30,000 tonnes of waste a year, the Marsh Barton plant would cook the waste and convert it to gas, which could be used to generate electricity.
Devon County Council believes its plan could help avoid around 4m of fines from the government for burying large amounts of waste.
From April next year councils will be fined 200 per tonne of excess waste going into landfill.
South Hams District Council's initiative could see it potentially cut its landfill rubbish by half.
It is extending its Sort It Out recycling scheme to all homes in the area and beginning a kerbside collection of kitchen and compost material.
