Garden waste can no longer be placed in wheelie bins |
A controversial garden waste collection scheme in Devon is being extended for a further month. Under the scheme people in Teignbridge are no longer allowed to put garden waste in their wheelie bins.
They have to use special bags instead.
The scheme has been operating on a pilot basis since July.
Turned into fertiliser
Householders are no longer permitted to put clippings in their bins but have to buy special bags from local outlets which are then collected every other week.
The move has caused some controversy with shops in areas, such as Ashburton, refusing to stock the bags on behalf of Teignbridge District Council.
Now the pilot is being extended for another month into October.
The council says so far it has been a success, enabling green waste to be composted and turned into fertiliser, rather than simply disappearing into landfill.
